Knutkorg: The Scandinavian Knot Basket

Course Overview

The knutkorg, or knot basket, is a classic style of Scandinavian basket. Constructed from willow and split cedar, the basket is an interlocking framework of bent and notched pieces. The pieces fit together like an ingenious puzzle, making the knutkorg a craft marvel. Over three days, students will learn to split and prepare cedar and willow, bend wood, and carve precise but simple joinery with a slöjd knife. This is a fun but challenging project open to students of all skill levels, but does require hand strength, stamina, and focus to complete. Being able to open a sealed jar is an example of hand strength.
