Northern Ecology

Healing Fire Leading to Cultural Revitalization

Course Overview

Join Ferin Davis Anderson (Ojibwe) and Hope Flanagan (Seneca) to learn about fire as an ecological and cultural tool to achieve beneficial and healing outcomes. We will discuss our relationship with fire and how we must find balance. It can be destructive but also revitalizing – it’s our duty to learn how to live with fire and be responsible stewards. We will also visit blueberry sites and learn how the Grand Portage Tribe is stewarding their land for the benefit of their people and plant relatives. Hope will share her knowledge about our plant relatives and their uses. Note, indigenous students can call and request a full scholarship to participate in this course.

Required Tools All Students Must Bring

  • Dress for light hiking outdoors in whatever weather conditions are present
  • We will drive to visit at least one site
