Timber Framing
Hand Sketching for Timber Framing and Woodworking
Course Overview
Despite the ubiquitous nature of AI, we believe the world still needs-- and maybe even prefers-- a good “back of the napkin” sketch. Learn practical hand-sketching skills for quickly visualizing and communicating building and construction ideas, including timber framing. In this two-day course, students will learn efficient, approachable techniques for using pencil and paper to sketch architectural concepts clearly and confidently. Whether designing a deck, an addition, or a timber-frame structure, these skills will help to communicate with builders and contractors, share ideas with family, support permitting conversations, and explore designs without relying on CAD software. The instructor will guide you through a simplified system of quick drawing developed from years of practice. Topics include creating effective line work, learning how to see and draw perspective, visualizing cross-sections and joinery, and applying traditional hand-drafting methods in a fast, accessible way.
Beginners who have never drawn will learn easy to apply techniques and intermediates who are already familiar with hand drawing but want to simplify their approach will also learn key shortcuts for well done drawings. Professional builders may also benefit from this course as they may like to “sketch-out” ideas with clients during scoping meetings about their visions for the structures you could build for them.
Day 1 focuses on tools, techniques, and the underlying logic of hand drawing. Day 2 builds on these fundamentals, refining skills through guided practice creating details, cross-sections, and scaled detail views.
