Timber Framing
Grindbygg Timber Frame Construction: Build Your Own
Course Overview
Grindbygg is a distinctive style of timber frame structure traditionally found along the coastal fjords of Southwest Norway. While its basic form shares similarities with many European and American timber frames—utilizing posts connected by tie beams and topped with wall plates supporting common rafters—the Grindbygg style is unique in its approach to joinery and assembly. Unlike conventional timber framing, Grindbygg does not rely on mortises or tenons. Instead, the tie beam is secured in a slot cut into the top of each post, forming a bridle joint. The wall plate rests on the tie beam and abuts the post, creating a joint characterized by simplicity and exceptional strength. Bracing elements are let into the sides of the wall timbers and secured with pegs, ensuring stability and durability. The components of a Grindbygg structure are joined through scribing, rather than relying solely on measurements from drawn plans. This method allows builders to incorporate a wide variety of materials, including naturally occurring shapes, which impart a “living” quality to the finished structure. Grindbygg frames can be constructed using purchased, sawn timbers or with minimally processed round materials harvested directly from one’s own site.
In this class students will build a 4 post, 10’x12’ structure. These small frames can be used as picnic shelters, woodsheds, gazebos and other outbuildings. In addition to the practical structure that students will take home, the goal is to enable course participants to utilize the techniques independently in their own building designs, including additions to their class project. We will discuss historic examples, materials (both sawn and gathered), tools (a mix of power and hand tools), safety, essential techniques, foundations, raising, and enclosures.
This Build Your Own course emphasizes smaller timber frame structures that can be completed in a single session. Students are limited to the foot print of the 4 post frame. The grindbygg frames are all gabled structures. Adjustments can be made to the roof pitch to match student preferences. Students may work alone but are encouraged to bring a partner for no additional charge. This course involves heavy lifting and active movement throughout the day.
