Leatherwork

Great Big Leather Tote

Course Overview

This tote bag is large enough to use as a weekender, or it can double as your favorite work bag. Your tote will have some basic pockets, brass feet, and D-rings for shoulder straps, and you may customize it with additional pockets, a stud closure, or a shoulder strap if time allows. Additional hardware and leather will be available for purchase from your instructor if you want to customize your tote with extra features or a shoulder strap.

You will learn how to sew leather by hand with a traditional two-needle saddle stitch, apply hardware, and decorate the surface, and additional topics will include wet-molding, pattern design, and leather care. This natural vegetable-tanned cowhide will darken significantly and grow even more beautiful over time.

Physical ability note: Sewing leather by hand requires moderate dexterity and hand strength, especially for a large item like this. Most students will manage just fine, but people with shaky or weak hands may find the process a bit frustrating.
