Course Overview

Black ash splint is a sturdy, flexible material that lends itself well to a variety of weaving techniques to create beautiful and useful baskets. In this course, students will be working with locally harvested and hand processed, pre-dried black ash splint to recreate an old style East Coast basket. This basket will incorporate a plain, checkerwork base with hex sides. This basket, originally intended as a sieve or colander, will measure approximately 8”x8”x6” upon completion and will complement any setting quite perfectly. This requires some hand strength to use scissors to cut the ash splint. Students ages 12+ may participate with an adult.  A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full playing adult. Note, an $85 materials fee will be payable to the instructor during class.
