Woodcarving

From Branch to Wall: Carving Hooks

Course Overview

A walk in the woods with instructor Mike Schelmeske is something of a treasure hunt. Where you might see a birch or an alder branch, he sees a wood carving project- a door handle, a coat hook, or the perfect crook to hang the dish towel on. Learn basic wood carving techniques and grips with a slojd knife in this introductory course. Inspired by natural, Scandinavian aesthetics, Mike will help students complete one or more simple projects that take advantage of the natural shape and strength of trees and wood grain. He’ll share some of his simple embellishment techniques that can take a hook from rustic to whimsical or even elegant, and offer tips for how to “shop the woods” for materials for your next project.
