From Bloom to Bar: Turning Raw Iron and Steel into Usable Steel

Course Overview

This course is intended is an extension of the Viking-Era Smelting course. Take your raw bloom the next step and make it into useable steel. Students will learn how to consolidate the bloom, fold it and forge weld it until it becomes a useable high carbon steel bar from which tools and other projects can be made. Students must also register for the preceding course Viking Era Smelting.

Required

You will need the following tools for this class:

Safety glasses (Non tinted)
Ear protection
Leather gloves
Natural fiber clothing only (no nylon clothing)
Leather shoes or boots (boots are preferred)
Clothing comfortable to be outdoors (long sleeves preferred for the first two days of class)
Water bottl

Optional Tools

Feel free to bring your favorite tools and whatever materials you might feel appropriate for this course.
