Woodcarving
Fancy Butter! Butter Molds and Butter Sampling
Course Overview
Butter is maybe the most basic of condiments, but in this multi-disciplinary course, we will make butter both taste and look fancy. Learn simple wood carving techniques to make decorative butter molds and how to make a variety of butters from scratch. Because why not have fancy butter? Over three days, we will carve at least two butter molds of different sizes, and learn to add simple and elegant designs using chip carving knives and gouges. While we’re carving, we’ll also make a variety of butters including salted, unsalted, cultured, and compounded and enjoy treats that are improved through the generous application of butter. As time allows, we may carve butter paddles, a more efficient way of applying maximum butter than a knife. Students will leave with multiple butter molds and a variety of butters. The materials fee includes butter making supplies; a nominal additional cost (~$5) depending on the size of the butter mold students select may apply. Students ages 14+ may register for this course independently; no carving experience is necessary.
