Crankie Boxes for Families

Course Overview

Come learn the rich and wonderful craft of crankie boxes. These visual storytelling devices have roots dating back to 19th-century America. A moving panorama is illustrated on a scroll, then mounted inside a box and played using two spools. Families will learn a brief history of crankies, see different types of boxes, and leave with one cardboard crankie box to create a story of their own. Drawing skills aren’t required, but an interest is helpful.

One registration fee includes:

  • One adult and one child, working together as a pair on one crankie box
  • The child must be at least 7 years old and be accompanied by an adult 18+
