Carving Christmas Figures: a Tomte or Sankta Lucia

Course Overview

How about carving a wooden figure for the upcoming holiday seasoneither as a gift for someone special, or for yourself (since you are special, too, right?). Harley, who says, "If you can peel a potato, you can carve a figure," will lead new as well as experienced carvers through the process of carving a Swedish tomte, or a Sankta Lucia figure, primarily using one single fixed-blade whittling knife. Learning the folklore of these cultural characters will be part of the experience.

Hours: Day 1: 5-8pm; Days 2 & 3: 9am-5pm

Required Tools

You will need the following tools for this class:

All required tools/materials are provided by your instructor and North House and will be available once the course begins. You may borrow a carving knife and a cut-resistant glove from the instructor, or you may purchase from instructor.  (Cut-resistant glove-$12, Knife; 2 different types-$45 or $22.50; basswood cutouts - $10 each)

Optional Tools

Feel free to bring your favorite tools and whatever materials you might feel appropriate for this course.
