Blacksmithing & Toolmaking
Blacksmithing for Women, Non-Binary, and Trans Folks
Course Overview
This introductory 3-day blacksmithing class led by a female blacksmith is a supportive, pressure-free environment for other female, non-binary and trans folks to give blacksmithing a try. If you have little to no experience working with steel and a coal forge, this is the perfect class for you! Discover that blacksmithing isn’t only about brute strength but also requires desire, patience, and finesse. This three-day workshop will provide an overview of the blacksmithing tradition covering primary tools, safety precautions, creative prospects, and most significantly, hands-on exercises. Participants will be taught how to light and manage a coal forge and will be introduced to some of the fundamental techniques of blacksmithing, including tapering, twisting, shouldering, punching, scrolling, riveting, and finishing. Students will leave with multiple projects. Students ages 18 and up are welcome to participate. By request, this session invites those who identify as women, non-binary, gender nonconforming, and/or trans to register as students. As a disabled blacksmith herself, the teacher is skilled at adapting blacksmithing techniques to suit a wide range of abilities. If you're unsure whether this class is a good fit or would like to discuss options ahead of time please contact the instructor.
