Basketry
Birch Bark Baskets with Woven Lids or Handles
Course Overview
Join John and Julie for birch bark basket weaving. Students may choose one of two designs: a lidded square basket or a handled basket made with diagonal weave. The lidded basket is made using a willow stick that is attached to birch bark loops that have been added to the basket and lid. Willow sticks are attached to all sides for some added strength. Black ash splints are used in the rim and bottom of the basket for reinforced strength. The handled basket is a diagonal weave. The rim, handle, and bottom of the basket has black ash wood splints sandwiched between the birch bark layers to give more strength. Both baskets can be finished with embellishments such as pinwheels and stars using different colored bark.
