This course will provide a starting point for those interested in improving their metalsmithing skills to allow the fabrication of simple rings and pendants out of silver or gold. These skills facilitate the incorporation of securely held stones into this jewelry, opening the door to a vast array of designs that can be attempted by the student following completion of this course.

Students will learn design fundamentals (why bezel v. prong settings, metals and mixed metals, etc.), anatomy of stones used in jewelry (cabochon/faceted/fantasy cuts, etc.), basic soldering skills and techniques, construction of a simple bezel setting practice piece, followed by hammer setting of an instructor-provided cabochon, design and construction of a final piece (ring or pendant), setting of stone, and finishing the piece. It is possible there will be time to craft another creation to improve the skills being learned while under supervision. Students age 16+ may sign up for this course.

Good eyesight (corrected) is a must, as we are working on a small scale. 

All needed tools, torches, and Sterling Silver to create a bezel set ring will be provided in class. There will be materials available for purchase should any student wishes to proceed with another project. The instructor will provide a selection of attractive cabochon cut stones for the project piece.
