Penny rugs use felted wool scraps to create a textile feast for the eye. Multicolored pieces of wool are arranged in contrasting and complementary colors to create table runners, placemats, trivets, pillow covers and more, making a room come alive with color. Shapes of descending sizes are layered onto a wool background and stitched into place. Called “penny” rugs because the original template was a large copper penny, these pieces have offered a frugal way to indulge in creative expression since the mid 1800s in America.

This will be a fun combination beginner/intermediate class. Those with little to no experience sewing will be welcomed, along with those interested in a focus on the embellishment aspect. A helper will be in the classroom to allow for more individualized attention between the range of abilities and interests. In this class, you'll design and finish one small sample project, before designing and sewing together a second larger piece. Or students may construct small samples of various embellished examples for future reference. It should be possible to complete the second project with a 16 large penny base in class, if choosing this route.

A wide selection of materials will be available to include wool, embroidery thread, beads, buttons, silk ribbon, yarn, wool roving, needles and pin backings. There will be pre-cut wool pennies, along with uncut wool and templates available to make personalized selections.

No sewing experience is needed. Students ages 14+ may register for this course independently. Youth ages 14+ are also welcome to register with an adult. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full-paying adult; call to register.
