Whether it’s garden shears, kitchen knives, or straight razors, all blades need a sharp edge to function properly. A dull tool is not only no fun to use, but might even be dangerous depending on its condition. This class will serve as a sharpening overview and will introduce the skills and equipment needed to get our dull tools back into working order. We’ll pair sharpening theory with hands-on practice of powered and hand sharpening. Students will leave class with sharp tools and the confidence to tackle further sharpening projects at home. This class requires hand strength and hand endurance. Opening up a sealed jar is an example of hand strength. Note: sharpening hand saws will not be covered in this class.

Required Tools

• Hand tools to sharpen as a class project: please bring a selection of tools to learn from that covers the range of types of tools you wish to learn to sharpen. Ten is a suggestion, bring as many as you wish. Get creative with what you think you can or can't sharpen.
• Sharpening stones/equipment: Loaner sharpening supplies are available during class if you want to hold off on purchasing your own so you have a better idea of what will fit your needs.
