Course Overview

Families making music together: it’s a tradition as old as the hills. Join dance caller Terrence Smith for a morning of family music-making. Together, children and adults will create a simple toy that is based on a real human activity—dancing! Using a potato, wood and simple tools, you'll build a Limberjack (or Limberjane!) that you can bounce on your knee and keep rhythm with the band, like the spoons or bones used for years by Appalachian and other folk music traditions. You'll take home a fully assembled limber-toy and a head full of ideas to create more limber-friends with things you find in the forest, under your bed or in the garage. In the second portion of this workshop, families will also learn traditional American favorites that feature simple melodies, lots of action and good fun for the whole family. Adult-child pair tuition cost $28/$35.
