Small hand scorps (a type of which is called a skave in Swedish) are a highly effective tool for refining hollowed shapes such as bowls and trays… even for saddling shaped chair seats. Larger two-handed scorps exist on the market, but these smaller-sized traditional tools are very hard to find in the US. In this course, students will make their own hand scorp. 

We will begin by studying several examples of these tools and trying them out to see what design variation each student prefers. Class will move into laying out, cutting, grinding, and shaping the steel blade to suit the user’s preference. Time will be taken to allow for a beautiful and truly custom-made tool. Students will rough grind and prep the blades for heat treatment at the end of day two. Day three will involve making a handle and final sharpening. 

This class is open to all levels, but beginners will need to contact the instructor prior to class.

Optional Tools

• Many students will wish to build their own tool-making kits from this class experience. Instructor will send out a short list of optional and recommended tools several weeks before class, these would include simple and versatile hand tools like rasps or files, layout tools like a scriber, square or markers, drill bits, etc.
