The Red and the Black: Swedish Sami Mittens by Skaite-Maria

Course Overview

Skaite-Maria was a Sami lady in northern Sweden who created her own, easily recognizable knitting about a hundred years ago. In this class, we will be recreating a historically accurate, Swedish Sami knitted mitten based on the instructor's article in PieceWork magazine, written together with Erika Nordvall-Falck. Together we will cast on and work through several aspects of The Red and the Black mitten, working small, geometric designs to form a sturdy, hardwearing hand garment.

Knitter should have basic knitting skills (knit, purl), knitting in the round and stranding experience. This is a good class for a student to make a first mitten or try color work.
