Techniques of Traditional Swedish Boatbuilding

Course Overview

This class is an introduction to the boatbuilding techniques used throughout Scandinavia and the Baltic for centuries. In this course you will learn how to design and build a full size pram using lapstrake techniques, bevel watertight planking, and cut compound bevels for framing and riveting. The design and construction techniques and materials for related watercraft of Scandinavia are also covered. This course is designed to give you the skills necessary to return to your own backyard or shop and build a pram at minimal cost. The materials needed to build this craft are available at the average lumber yard. A minimum investment of tools are needed for this old-world style of wooden boat construction. The subject of this course will be a 10’-16’ Swedish pram, a simple, honest watercraft. In addition to five full days of hands-on planking and framing, students will engage in discussions on design of prams, sail rigs and their design, placement of rowing stations, etc.
