Sveiping: Bent Wood Box

Course Overview

For centuries, bent wood boxes have been used in Scandinavia and in other cultures to create beautiful and functional storage containers. Whether small and delicate to hold valuables or large enough to carry as a lunch box, bent wood boxes have both utilitarian focus and an artistic charm. In this course, students will learn how to choose and prepare materials to make Norwegian bent wood boxes (Sveiping). A combination of dry and green wood will be used in construction. Hand-split birch root is used to bind joints. One afternoon will be spent in the forest gathering supplies to complete each box. If time allows, students will work on multiple boxes of varying sizes. Tool use, sharpening, and technique will be touched upon daily. A brief history of the uses of traditional sveiping will also be explored.
