Course
Steambending & Finishwork
Course Overview
Once the boat has been planked and taken off the mold, the Peapod requires precise placement of steambent ribs. Students will heat ash ribs up to 175 degrees in a handcrafted wooden boxed steamer and lay the ribs inside the boat for additional reinforcement. Shaping gunnels, building the breasthook, constructing thwarts and risers and installing seats is the focus of the second half of the course. Students will learn about the finer finishing details such as chamfering and oiling that makes any wooden boat uniquely elegant.
