Course Overview

This description has been updated from the catalog listing:

Explore the ancient and mostly forgotten art of sprang, an ancient method of twisting threads where each row worked yields two rows of cloth. Sprang cloth has been used in many places around the world to create an elastic fabric well suited for hats, belts, scarves, leggings, and more.

Starting with a pre-warped frame, students will create stretchy sprang bags. After learning the the basics of sprang cloth creation and finishing techniques, students can either make a larger bag, or try a variety of motifs in a series of smaller bags. Each student will move at their own pace, following their interests. We will discuss techniques for creating larger sprang items (such as hats, belts, scarves, fingerless mittens, leggings, and sweaters) as time and student interest allows.

Sprang bags can hold cell phones, fiber projects, dice, wallets, and any other small items.

Physical ability note: Finger and wrist dexterity. Ability to sit and work in the same position for several hours a day.

Students ages 16+ may register for this course independently. Students ages 14-15 may register with a full-paying adult. The youth student will receive a 25% intergenerational discount; call to register. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees.

Optional Tools
