Course
Spinning Clinic with Norman Kennedy
Course Overview
North House is honored to welcome master spinner and weaver Norman Kennedy as the featured instructor during Unplugged XI. In this intensive two-day workshop, suitable for those who have experience spinning but would like to expand their knowledge, Norman will cover the finer points of hand-spinning, using treadle wheels and spindles with cotton and wool fiber. Awarded a National Heritage Fellowship in 2003 for his work in preserving and teaching the techniques and knowledge of traditional textile production from his native Scotland, Norman is a “keeper of the old ways.” He will discuss the history of spinning, and explore the rich tradition of ballad singing tightly linked to fiber craft. Join a master craftsman and teacher for a rare visit to the Midwest, and stay all weekend to celebrate the potent connection of craft and music during the Unplugged XI music festival. Materials fee includes a cotton fiber spinning kit and all fiber needed. Students should bring their own wheels.
