Songs & Stories: Great Lakes Maritime History Mini Course

Course Overview

The Great Lakes were once home to over 1,800 tall ships. When salt water sailors came to the Great Lakes they brought their culture with them, including language, technology, community, superstitions, customs, and jurisprudence. The ballads (forebitters) and shanties were adopted and adapted by freshwater sailors and spread throughout the region, to lumber camps, saloons, other vessels, and, sometimes, back out to the oceans of the world. Join singer, songwriter and tall ship captain Tom Kastle for an intriguing and interactive look at our heritage.
