Course Overview

If you work on traditional craft in your home woodshop, you need one of these. The shaving horse is a must-have shop tool for the traditional woodworker committed to pursuing classic building projects that require handtools and handwork. In its simplest form, the shaving horse is a low bench that you straddle, with a foot-operated swinging clamp. Compared to a standard workbench with a conventional wood vise, the shaving horse allows for quick adjustments and leverage that ultimately suits drawknife and spokeshave work. Students will learn basic mortise and tenon joinery to complete a 10 1/2" wide by 6' long shaving horse made from ash hardwood, ensuring longevity and years of use. The instructor will demonstrate varied uses of the shaving horse, including working chair legs, preparing wood to be turned on a lathe and carving spoons and other Swedish influenced woodworking projects.
