Course
Sew Your Own Capote
Course Overview
An icon of the American west and the fur trade era, the capote, or blanket wool jacket, is a warm, soft, layerable jacket sewn from 100% wool trade-style blankets. Also known as the 'canoe jacket' these wool overcoats are great for cool nights around the campfire. Students will design their own jacket based upon traditional styles such as the Trapper (knee length), the Norwester (double breasted hooded) or the Colonial (single breasted, capped, high collar). Jackets will be handsewn with tanned leather or artificial sinew as a way to bring the jacket 'alive'. Edges and welting will be done with 100% felted wool. No historical re-enactment here, just a spectacular wool jacket that will keep you warm through the cool months or on your next Boundary Waters canoe trip. Students may bring their own favorite Hudson Bay or Pendelton blankets if they wish.
