Sensible Eating: Chickens For Your Space

Course Overview

Have you ever thought of keeping chickens, but not sure you have the space or wondering about the means to get started? This course will answer those questions, as you learn the basics of chicken husbandry, including what they eat (almost anything), how much space they need to be happy (shockingly little), and how to get started raising your flock, no matter the size! Over the course of two days, we will discuss various chicken breeds (with the emphasis on standard layers vs. bantams or meat birds) and where to get them. Day one will include visits to some local chicken yards, discovering a variety of set-ups. On day two, the class will build a chicken brooder or small chicken tractor suitable for use with a family flock. At the end of the course, the student-built chicken project will be available for purchase to interested participants. Students will leave with a complete set of plans to make their own chicken tractor/brooder, enough to get you started toward raising chickens for your backyard.
