Course
Sailing Away From Fossil Fuels
Course Overview
Since the Age of Sail ended some 100 years ago, sailing has been relegated to sport and recreation. However, sail-based transport will remain the only large-scale preindustrial form of large-scale, long-distance transportation available to us once fossil fuels are no longer available. Sailing ships will be the only way to tie the world together. In the meantime, life on the water remains the lifestyle of choice for many people, and their numbers will grow out of necessity as rising ocean levels and extreme weather events brought on by rapid climate change continue to inundate and rearrange the coastlines, along which much of the world's population lives. Join Northern Sustainability Featured Speaker Dmitry Orlov for a fascinating seminar that will explore the present and the future of sail, and of water transportation in general, from many different angles.
