Ropework: Tying A Rope Fender

Course Overview

The traditional boat fenders gracefully protecting North House's Mackinaw sailboat on campus received so much attention, we just had to offer this project to boaters and knot tyers alike. Rope fenders look elegant, do a great job of protecting your boat hull, and complement the traditional appearance of wooden boats. In this class, students will create their two "crown sinnet boat fenders" from manila hemp line. We'll also consider other types of practical fenders students can make. Rope boat fenders are a fun introductory project that will open the door to doing your own practical knotwork. Sailors, boatbuilders and owners, this is a great early spring project to get you into the swing of boating season.
