Romancing the Stone: An Introduction to Inuit Soapstone Carving

Course Overview

When he was 5 years old, a plane arrived in David Ruben Piqtoukun's Inuit camp in the high Canadian Arctic. His life was forever changed, as he was lifted out of his traditional lifestyle and into the unfamiliar world of boarding schools where the Inuktitut language was forbidden and his connection to his family and culture was severed. In his early twenties David learned to carve soapstone from his brother and has used his art as a way to reclaim his traditional Inuit culture. Under David's expert guidance, students will learn to carve soapstone, using rasps and chisels to shape the soft stone. In this introductory class, students will begin with a simple pendant, and move on to larger and more detailed projects as their skills develop. A world-renowned artist, stone he has selected, and stories to tell-all at North House-an experience not to be missed.
