Who hasn’t surveyed their backyard and imagined the perfectly-sized building to store their wood, garden tools, toys, or assorted clutter? As homesteaders have demonstrated for centuries, the outbuilding is the answer! This course is designed for students with little or no building experience who want to build a small structure--nearly anyone can come away from this course with the skills needed to outfit themselves with an outbuilding. Together, students will construct a small storage building designed for a specific purpose. This course will cover design aspects of storage spaces, and introduce some creative solutions to make small spaces work. Jack studs to joists, fly rafters to d-edge, birds' mouths to top plates -- students will learn the use of basic hand and power tools, and develop knowledge of the materials and techniques used in frame or "stick" construction.
