Course
Near Net Zero: Energy Efficient Home Design
Course Overview
Imagine living in a home that uses almost no fossil fuels yet allows most of the conveniences of modern living. This course will explore the principles of passive solar heating, solar hot water heating, wind energy and photovoltaic systems. Students will investigate and discuss the use of these principles in providing fossil-fuel-free heat and electricity while also reducing global warming. The course begins with a half day on “chalk talk” and discussion, presenting techniques and tools for understanding how different systems work. The afternoon will be utilized to visit multiple sites that model different strategies and techniques. This class will help students move toward ultra-energy efficient -- "Near Net Zero"-- living.
