Course
Nature and Aesthetics of Traditional Scandinavian Woodcraft
Course Overview
Jögge Sundqvist, internationally-know woodcarver and woodworker, hosts this three-day workshop which is specifically intended for highly experienced traditional woodworkers. The course explores the connection between the traditional and contemporary worlds of woodworking and in particular immerses in Swedish wood traditions. During the workshop students will build a small box which locks with sliding dovetails. Coursework and discussions will open a window into a whole world of Scandinavian furniture traditions that is based on high knowledge of materials and techniques, where the all-by-hands process interacts with function and design (generally not a common way of working within the United States). How do the rural Scandinavian ways of working affect the expression of the objects? How is the communication between the object and the owner? There is a thin line between craft, folk art and design - how they influence and impact each other is an intriguing question. Course size is limited to eight students.
