Course
Natural Dyes in the Steam Box
Course Overview
Dyeing cloth using natural materials is a magical process: Add a bit of steam and assorted leaves, flowers, old rusty nails, and a little time…the results are extraordinary. In this course, students will learn a bit about the history, chemistry, and new innovations in natural dyeing processes, and use a variety of materials that vary seasonally. You never quite know what you'll pull out of the steam box, and working with other students allows for a wide variety of experiments and collaborations to occur. The materials fee includes three silk scarves students will complete during the course. Participants will also have the opportunity to create cotton fabric samples from dyeing with rusted metals. This course is open to students ages 10+ if accompanied by an adult. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register. Ages 14+ may attend on their own.
