Course Overview

You’ve heard of the tiny house but what about the micro-house? Long-time instructor Mark Hansen is fascinated with simple living under 100 square feet. After years of building boats and small shelters, he’s turning his expertise with methods and materials of boatbuilding to this question: how can you design and build a space that is comfortable in the northern climate, lightweight and portable? This primer is designed to help you get thinking about the possibilities of living with less in order to find more freedom financially, environmentally and leave you with more time to do as you please. Living in a microhouse isn’t for everyone, but if you love camping or have considered the ease of small, this seminar will provide design ideas, information on materials acquisition, a field trip to local micro houses and creative fuel to fire your curiosity. Welcome to grassroots experimental housing. Scholarships are available for Cook County residents via the Shirley Hansen Memorial Fund; call to inquire.
