Course
Machine Knitting Introductory Course
Course Overview
Knitting machines have a long history beginning with their first patent in 1589. Today’s modern machines allow you to make texture, fairisle designs, and more. This class is an opportunity to try machine knitting with J. Wurst, the editor of Machine Knitting Inspiration.
The class will begin with knitting machine TLC: cleaning and lubrication, and testing to make sure all parts of the machine are operable. We will continue with learning to cast on, make a texture design pattern, and bind off while knitting a basic scarf. Other projects can include a texture stitch washcloth, Scandinavian design stocking hat, tuck stitch cowl, and a triangular shawl using a short row method. Garment construction will also be discussed to prepare participants for a future garment project.
Students should bring a knitting machine in working order (major repairs will not be done in class) or contact the instructor ahead of time to reserve a machine provided by the instructor. Recommended machines for class can be: Silver Reed, Studio, Brother, KnitKing, or Toyota. Machines can be new or vintage going back to the 1970’s. Machines not recommended for this class include Bond, Passap, Superba or circular machines. The instructor will have an extra machine that can be used in class.
J. Wurst encourages people to express their creativity through garments or fiber art made on the knitting machine. The instructor will demonstrate stockinet, tuck stitch, knitweave, picot edging, fairisle, and Scandinavian motifs. Techniques shown will include casting on, increases, decreases, cables, stripes, hanging a hem, mock rib, binding off, and automatic knit-on fringe. Let's use the knitting machine to explore your creative side!
No experience necessary. Physical ability note: Class requires pushing the carriage of the knitting machine across the needle bed. Some mobility required.
