Inuit Soapstone Carving: Speaking through Sculpture

Course Overview

Now a world-renowned artist, David Ruben's sculptures are rooted in his Inuit past, and his techniques draw from the traditional style of carving. In this class, students will continue to develop their skills at soapstone carving, using larger pieces and aspiring to create more complex forms. Students will work with the instructor to study the shape of the material, develop a sketch and complete the project during the session. This year, David will focus on sculpting techniques as well as traditional carving techniques. This is a unique opportunity to work with an accomplished and highly respected artist, and learn to tell stories through stone. Students will start with a large block of stone, and use chisels and other tools to sculpt the material.
