Course Overview

Truly immerse in the boreal forest with Garrett Conover, an expert and experienced winter camper who, quite literally, wrote the book on being comfortable in the winter woods. You’ll travel to a small inland lake, set up your tents and gain first-hand experience in the field. The days will include nuts and bolts discussions of the many options for winter camping, including types of tents, stoves, and travel methods. You’ll also cover tracking, natural history and travel conditions, and of course, hear many stories of time spent in northern locales across the globe from Garrett. Spend a night under the starry winter skies of the north, philosophizing and enjoying the good camaraderie of fellow winter travelers. This workshop will include lots of opportunity for your questions, and be flexible enough to allow for teachable moments as the weather conditions and interests of the students suggest. Garrett will provide tent space for up to nine participants, though additional participants may bring their own tents. Please inquire at the time of registration. If you've always wanted to experience warm winter camping but don't have the tent yet, this is your chance to try out the magic of woodstoves and cotton canvas.
