Course

Gourd Vessels, Lids & Sheaths

Course Overview

Gourdetry…not quite pottery, not quite basketry. Gourds have been used as functional containers, ceremonial vessels and trade items since before basketry and pottery techniques were developed. In this class, you'll explore ancient and modern uses for gourds and learn about growing, harvesting and curing hard-shell gourds in your own backyard! You'll cut and clean two gourds as well as make coiled lids that fit different shapes using natural materials. You'll also stitch fiber sheaths, which can be used to provide an anchor for a carrying strap, cushion contents, or protect the gourd's base from wear and tear.
