Course
Foraging to Fiber: Naturally Dyed Tote Bag and Scarf
Course Overview
In this class, we’ll make a beautiful scarf and sturdy canvas and leather tote, naturally dyed with plants, flowers, barks, and berries that we forage ourselves, as well as with plants provided by the instructor. On day one, we’ll learn about which local plants are best for natural dyeing, and will be able to tour North House's natural dye gardens, as well as the local natural environment for practice with plant identification. We will make one big dye pot with what we find, and also bundle and steam dye our material to prepare for sewing. On day two, we will sew up our bags and attach the leather handles. If time allows, smaller projects, such as zipper pencil pouches or cosmetic cases and additional scarves can be completed. We will also discuss scouring and mordanting our materials to prepare them for dyeing.
Be prepared to walk outside near campus (pavement, grass, rock beach) and potentially brave the elements! Sewing machine experience is helpful but not required. Feel free to bring your own sewing machine if you prefer, and be prepared to share the machines and tools provided by the instructor and North House. Students may also feel free to bring any natural plant matter that they may be interested in using for dyeing.
This course is open to students ages 16+.
