Felting Foundations

Course Overview

Would you like to refine your felt-making skills? Or perhaps you have never made felt and would like to learn about the magic of wool? In this class we will begin by looking at wool from varying breeds of sheep through the lens of a felt-maker, and also try our hand at washing and carding raw wool (most of the wool used in our projects will already be washed, dyed, and carded). With this as a foundation, we will turn to making flat-felt (vs 3-D) - which is the beginning for many different types of projects; rugs, runners, yardage to sew, wall pieces - and students will choose their own flat-felt project during the class. We will also learn to make and design with pre-felts, as well as have an opportunity to incorporate silk and other textures into your felt if you would like.

This class is great for beginners who want to go home with the skills needed to make felt, or more advanced students looking to learn new techniques.

We will be shrinking the felt by hand, so please come prepared to be on your feet and physically engaged with your project.

Youth age 16+ may register for this course on their own. Youth ages 8 and up may attend if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete one project and pay one materials fee.
