Course
Felting for the Sauna
Course Overview
Create your own wet felted wool sauna kit for a dreamy, comfortable sauna session. In this class, students will learn wet felting techniques to make a cozy sauna hat, a comfortable seat cushion, a pair of sauna slippers, and a bar of wool felted soap. The impressive versatility of wool truly shines in a sauna. The hat keeps your head cool so you can stay in the sauna longer, the cushion insulates your seat when sitting on a hot sauna bench, and the slipper’s slip on to protect your feet as you walk across rocks, snow, or ice on the way to your cold dip. The felted soap is a great scrubby if bathing is part of your sauna. You can choose from a variety of wool breeds and colors depending upon your sensitivity to wool. Smooth and soft merino will be available for those who are sensitive; and for those who would like something more durable, other breeds of sheep wool will be available, including some local wool in natural colors.
Students will learn both flat felting and sculptural 3-d felting to make at least three of the items. If you’re ready for a challenge, the hat, cushion, and slippers can all be finished in class. Substituting the felted soap for a larger project will make room for a slower pace experience. Students may choose their path as they go.
Be prepared for physical exertion and being on your feet for this project.
