Course
Etched Birch Bark Maple Sugar Cones
Course Overview
At their most elemental, baskets are for carrying and storing useful, valuable things. It follows then that the baskets made in a given place say a lot about the culture, people, and landscape of that particular spot in the world. Join Greg Biskakone Johnson to make a simple type of storage container that speaks profoundly of the Anishinaabe people indigenous to the Great Lakes region: the etched birch bark maple sugar cone. These useful items store maple sugar in a way that can be safely transported and easily gifted, as was commonly done to send visitors with a sweet remembrance of a shared experience. Learn to etch birch bark, stitch the cones with basswood fiber and of course, make maple sugar, and bring home a few finished sugar cones to share with your own guests.
