Course

Decorative Ironwork Intensive

Course Overview

From fireplace tools to shelf brackets and kitchen racks, decorative ironwork can highlight any part of the northern home. This course will enable experienced beginners and intermediate blacksmiths to work alongside master blacksmith Michael Jones to design and build their own unique piece of ironwork. The course will start with a general introduction to design needs and aesthetics, as well as an overview of design physics and philosophy. Students will be learning to ask the right questions, think within certain parameters, and solve problems creatively. Books and resource materials will be provided to inspire design. Students will then forge test pieces to try out their designs. Students will spend the next three days working independently on their projects; the instructor will demonstrate techniques to the group as needs arise. This course will be vigorous and physical; although not required, students are encouraged to enroll in the single-day course “Forgework Skills Refresher” prior to this experience to brush up or acquire skills. Students ages 16+ with appropriate experience are welcome to participate.
