Course Overview

A pair of sandals that fits just right is a highly prized possession—and all the better if they are attractive and one-of-a-kind. Create a pair of custom leather sandals to enjoy for years to come. Students will spend some time sketching ideas and discussing execution, working from a few basic designs the instructor will provide. Students will then hand cut, wet-mold, and custom fit their sandals, adding a leather sole and heel with optional waffle tap for traction and waterproofing. The course will include learning skills that may be applicable to a number of various other leatherworking projects. Students aged 16+ may register for this course independently. Students aged 14-15 may register with a full-paying adult. The youth student will receive a 25% intergenerational discount; call to register.

Physical Ability/Skills Needed

  • This class is suitable for beginners but will require a good amount of hand strength, as well as the ability to kneel on or bend down to the ground.

Required Tools

  • All required tools/materials are provided by your instructor and North House and will be available once the course begins. You might consider wearing shoes that are easy to take on and off as you'll be doing lots of fitting.

Optional Tools

  • Feel free to bring a pair of sandals that you already love or that you know fit well; this can help us recreate a fit that you know works well for you, but it’s not necessary.
  • Bring any inspirational photos or sketches of sandal designs that you like. If you aren’t sure the instructor will have plenty of patterns to choose from.
  • Bring any favorite pair of sharp scissors or a utility knife for cutting paper patterns and leather, pencils and sketching materials, and any special adornments, buckles or personal leather you may want to add to your sandals to personalize them.
