Course Overview

Learning to sew often leads the novice into more complicated, detailed projects, like tailoring. In this class, we will move in a more creative direction—perhaps using thrift store woolens, an outgrown dress, silk scarves, or your grandmother’s lovely lace trims—to craft original garments. Students will learn how to dismantle and use an old garment as a pattern, piece different fabrics into larger lengths, and recycle garment details (like pleats or pockets) into a one-of-a-kind garment. Imagination, a willingness to experiment, and a love of fabric are all ‘musts’ for this kind of sewing! The materials fee covers miscellaneous sewing supplies and paper for patterns. The instructor will also have some fabric and thread available for purchase. Students should feel comfortable with a sewing machine and know how to make simple garments. Youth age 12+ are welcome to register for this class. Youth ages 10+ may attend if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register.
