Course Overview

Hand-stitched mending can be a gateway to creative expression, as well as a way to care for our textiles, the people we love, and our planet. In this workshop, we'll build skills for useful and beautiful stitching from simple to invisible to decorative. We'll try out hand-sewing techniques including darning, boro-style patchwork, and duplicate stitch for knits. We'll investigate the structure of woven and knitted fabrics and explore the meaning of stitching and mending in the modern world. We'll practice together over three sessions on Zoom. Class recordings with demonstrations will be available to students to review between classes and after the class is over. Everyone is welcome in this course, from beginners who have never sewn a stitch before to experienced fiber artists looking for more ways to extend the life of their handmade garments.
