Course Overview

Wool is an incredibly flexible and playful medium full of color and textural possibilities. In this workshop we will replace paint with wool as our artistic medium as we create one large mural encouraging us to consider the many challenges and injustices of the past year. There will be three 4’ by 6’ murals created over the summer, each with a theme: healing, dreaming and building. We will be creating the third, final mural. Only with the hands of many, using the ancient, traditional methods of felted rug making, can this be accomplished. In this class, everyone will be invited to make a symbol for one of the three murals, using wet felting and needlefelting techniques. Then we will begin the process of creating the final mural: lay out the base wool, consider the design/colors, add the prefelted symbols and finally felt the mural. Throughout this process you will gain experience in laying out fibers, blending colors, adding silk for texture, how to read your wool, understand when a felt is finished, how to work on a large felted piece and more. There will be a final felted mural celebration at North House Folk School the following weekend, in person as we are able and online for those who are distant. No felting skill is required, but a desire to create a large art piece with others that will become a beautiful and durable testimony of the challenging past year.
