Explore a contemporary approach to the ancient art of coiled basketry using materials available in your own back yard. In class you'll work with prepared Siberian iris leaves; later on you'll be able to explore the technique using bulrush, cattails, pine needles, willow and other common natural materials. In addition, learn an open-core technique called the basketmaker's buttonhole stitch, shaping control, split core techniques, lid and ledge construction, freeform motifs and more. Class discussions will include how to grow or gather, harvest and prepare materials for future projects.
